Time for Fresh Green Tea!
May 2nd is the eighty-eighth day, called hachijuhachi-ya,
from the beginning of spring.
Be the first to enjoy this year’s fresh green tea
at our “Hachijuhachi-ya” event.*
 

*Our ”Hachijuhachi-ya” event was certified as a “beyond2020” program by the Preparations and Management of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, which is approved by the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan. The “beyond2020” program gives its logo to cultural programs that contribute to the creation of legacy that the next generation will be proud of, making full use of the regional rich and diverse cultures.

Happo-en’s garden is now in the stage of early summer, with full-blown satsuki azalea and fresh greenery. Hachijuhachi-ya is just around the corner.
 

Hachijuhachi-ya was a very important day for the Japanese as agricultural people, which was the time to plant seeds, to prepare for rice planting, and to start spring farm work such as tea picking.
 

For Japanese people, the number 8 is a lucky number, and hachijuhachi, 88, is a double lucky number. Additionally, if we overlap the three Japanese characters for 88 (八,十, and 八), they resemble the character for rice (米), making 88 a very important number as well as a lucky one.
Our “Hachijuhachi-ya” event is in its 5th year, with hopes that all the attendees have a great day.
 

In our “Hachijuhachi-ya” event at Happo-en, you can be the first to taste the fresh green tea which is delivered every morning from a fine Japanese tea company Fukujuen, from Kyoto. Especially this year, the fresh green tea is rich in nutrients and umami ingredients, which are said to be good for longevity. Enjoy it in view of the greenery in our lit-up Japanese garden at nighttime.
