“Shinwa”: a new nighttime element produced by Happo-en!
“Shinwa” are Japanese myths telling about Japanese culture, customs, faith, and history

Our “SDGs Business Events 2018” on August 28 was produced by Happo-en, and we worked together cooperatively to make the event with a local government, the Host Town*, farm producers, craftsmen, people who deal with the future of food, and students who are active with the SDGs.

*Host Town: ”In order to contribute to making Japan a “Sports Nation,” encouraging globalization, revitalization of local [rural] areas and promoting inbound tourism toward the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we will spread the “Host Town” local authorities all over Japan which are trying human, economic and cultural exchanges with the participating countries/regions.”

In our “SDGs Business Events 2018,” Happo-en offered some features connected with the SDGs. Here is our nighttime element, “Shinwa”:

SHINWA Movie

From all across the world, Happo-en has received messages that people want a new experience, something other than Japanese drums, shamisen, kimono, or samurai… In “Shinwa,” we offer a new Japanese world which passes between the past and present of Japan, taking motifs from Japanese myths. Japan has a long history with countless customs and culture.

The myth, “Kitsune no Yomeiri*” was performed. Music, sound, people, food, space, video, vibration, and voice fused together on August 28.
* The Kitsune no Yomeiri (“The Fox’s Wedding”), which is similar to “The Monkey’s Wedding” in English, is a fantastic event passed down in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. “Kitsune no Yomeiri” can refer to atmospheric ghost lights (a phenomenon during which it appears as if paper lanterns from a wedding procession are floating through the dark) and wedding processions that can be seen in classical Japanese legends. “Kitsune no Yomeiri” tells about foxes (who often play tricks on humans in Japanese legends) and various Shinto rituals.

Many attendees oohed and ahhed and were very impressed by the performance.
