It’s time to showcase the Japanese spirit!
Summer is here, so what can we do but dance and celebrate?
Come join our summer festival, MATSURI JAPAN 2019, on August 22nd and 23rd.

 

 

Several of the famous matsuri, or festivals, across Japan are convening right here at Happo-en. At MATSURI JAPAN 2019, the following groups are gathering to showcase their passion and spirit passed down through generations.

Awa dance from Koenji, Tokyo (originally from Tokushima, characterized by simple choreography and chants).

Kasa dance (dancing with decorated paper umbrellas) from Inaba, Tottori.

Yosakoi dance (a dynamic hybrid dance of both traditional and modern choreography) by dance performance group HAKU.

Kagura (a musical and theatrical performance offered to the gods) from Iwami, Tottori.

Hyottoko dance (a dance performed with comical masks based on a legend) from Hinata, Miyazaki.

Festival drumming from Ryuukyuu (Okinawa).

Tiger dance from Yamada-sakaida village, Iwate.

Yosakoi-naruko dance (similar to Yosakoi) performed by the group Asaka Naruko Yuuwakai, from Saitama.

Eisa dance (a folk dance from Okinawa) performed by the group Nankuru-Eisa.

There will also be festival booths with shooting games, water balloon yo-yos, ring toss, and more! The food stalls will highlight special dishes made from ingredients across Japan.

Come enjoy the pinnacle of Japanese summer culture with us. You can even wear your own yukata, a summer kimono, to deepen the festive experience.
