By partnering with Fukushima Prefectural Iwase Agricultural High School, Happo-en is empowering the next generation through food production

This past summer, as we traveled across the country to find new ingredients for our dishes, we met a high school student from Iwase Agricultural High School in Fukushima. We were struck by the student’s passion for using agriculture to impact the local community.

We learned that this high school was focusing on obtaining Global G.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practice) certification for the produce they were growing, so they could communicate to the world that food from Fukushima is safe. Currently, they have eleven types of certified produce: rice, apples, lettuce, cucumbers, mizuna greens, basil, daikon radishes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes, and pears. This is more than any other high school in the nation

We were inspired and wanted to see the project first hand, so we visited the high school in October and hosted a cooking class using the Global G.A.P. certified produce that the students had grown. We also harvested rice by hand with the students to spend more time getting to know them.

On November 29th, we finalized our official business-to-school partnership with Iwase High School. By choosing to use the produce grown by the students, we want to connect with and empower the next generation through food.

Through this partnership and the dishes we serve, we want to communicate that the Global G.A.P. certified food from Fukushima is very safe. We are also hopeful that being connected to a younger generation in the agricultural field will inspire us with new and diverse food creations for the 2020 Olympics.

Stay tuned as we continue to support, inspire, and innovate through food and hospitality
